As part of an Earth Day celebration, Queen Margaret’s ECE students participated in a community Shoreline Clean-Up at Transfer Beach in Lady-smith on March 14, 2013.

In preparation for this trip, the three and four-year-old students learned about ways to protect our planet by sharing books and singing songs that highlighted the need to care for the environment. The importance of keeping our precious planet safe and clean was the message!

Excitement about the adventure was in the air as the children, their parents, and teachers dawned gloves and raingear. Over 30 children headed off to the beach to participate in this environmentally-focused event. This little group of enthusiastic learners managed to collect over six bags of garbage from the beach in a very short time. Then it was time to celebrate their good work with some playtime!

Upon returning to their class-rooms, the children talked with their teachers about the highlights of this adventure and participated in activities and discussions about their learning experience. The children discussed and charted the garbage that they had found on the beach, and how the items might be harmful to the earth or the ocean. The teachers followed up with a craft that celebrated the significance of little hands at work to help the earth.).
